SHOULD A VALEUR DE SUBJONCTIF

Should joue parfois le rôle de subjonctif surtout en anglais écrit. Il se construit ainsi :

On le trouve dans les constructions suivantes :

1. Adjectifs + should exprimant l’importance d’une action

- It’s imperative that each of you should do his duty.
(Il est indispensable que chacun de vous fasse son devoir.)

Avec ces expressions, Should au subjonctif se construit de la même façon mais exprime des notions différentes selon l’adjectif :

• La nécessité : it’s necessary- important- imperative that.
• L’invraisemblance : it’s incredible – unlikely- extraordinary that
• La normalité, l’anormalité : it’s natural, right, wrong that
• Ce qui paraît souhaitable, regrettable : it’s advisable that, it’s a pity that, it’s disappointing that…
• Le refus d’accepter une idée : there’s no reason why, I don’t see why…

2. Après des verbes exprimant l’ordre ou la demande

Les verbes employés sont : to suggest – to insist – to propose- to arrange – to order – to command – to demand – to ask.

- The general ordered that the prisoner should be shot.
(Il ordonna que le prisonnier soit fusillé.)

- We had insisted that he should come (that he come).
(Nous avions insisté pour qu’il vienne.)

3. Après des adjectifs exprimant une réaction émotionnelle à une situation

To be surprised, anxious, keen, delighted that…

- I’m surprised that you should think so.
(Je m’étonne que vous pensiez ainsi.)

4. Après "so that" : le but

- They locked him in so that he shouldn’t escape.
(Ils l’enfermèrent afin qu’il ne s’échappât pas.)

5. Après "in case (that)", "for fear (that) " : la crainte

- I’ll ring him up again in case (that) he should forget his appointment.
(Je lui téléphonerai de nouveau de peur qu’il n’oublie son rendez-vous.)

Remarque :
Dans un style très soigné, on emploie should pour exprimer une hypothèse peu vraisemblable.
